Lumi Team together with Maker Faire Zagreb Team

We at Lumi Industries are a company developing and producing resin based 3D printers, selling consumables materials for 3D printing, doing third-party Open Innovation research and development for small and large companies like Ivoclar Vivadent.

However we were born as "Makers" thanks to the Maker Faire in Rome in 2013 and the inside spirit of the Maker never dies. For every "serious" project that we develop, we try out other more fun and often socially-oriented projects, precisely to make people understand that new digital technologies can help not only us, but also people with disabilities. All our projects are in an advanced development phase, but we are always looking for partners wanting to help us take them to a higher level.

This year we took part in both the first Maker Faire Zagreb, in the perfect context the museum of science and technology dedicated to Nikola Tesla and our annual appointment, the Maker Faire European edition in Rome.

Thanking the organizers who allow us every year to show to a big public our ideas and the many visitors who stopped by our booths to discover them, let's summarize the many projects we have shown, for all those who were not able to come and visit us. Since there are so many projects, here is the first part!

Lumi Cares social responsibility program

Under this name, we present a series of non-profit projects dedicated in particular to visual disability.

TEXT TO BRAILLE CONVERTER

It is a free and Open Source software available at this link that allows you to transform a text in Latin characters into a three-dimensional file in Braille language. The file can be immediately downloaded and inserted into inserted in larger projects, as did the students of the Mount St. Mary high school, Oklahoma USA, or printed directly with a resin printer in the form of a tag in standard Braille standard sizes.

Molbed

Presented at Maker Faire Rome in 2016, in the context of Make To Care competition organized by the pharmaceutical company Sanofi Genzime , it is a refreshable Braille language electronic module that allows you to create, in a simple and low cost way, assistive devices for blind people.

Molbed modules can be connected to electronic devices (tablet, computer) for the translation in Braille of the written screen, or they can be used, as educational tools, for teaching Braille to blind children.

TOF

Lumi Cares latest project of 2019 is the TOF bracelet, an Open Source assistive wearable device for blind or visually impaired people. It does not replace the blind stick, but can be a useful addition to it.

The stick in fact, can become difficult to use to orientate oneself in closed and crowded places. TOF instead, is a simple wearable device that can be worn on the wrist and measures the distance between the user's wrist and an obstacle.

It uses eye-safe infrared laser light pulses, and vibrates with intensity proportional to the distance.

It is compact, rechargeable and low cost, because it is totally 3D printed.

Lumi wine talking label

A small project we have built for blind and elderly people who have difficulty reading labels on wine bottles.

It is a simple ring-shaped electronic device with rechargeable battery and speaker. It is meant to be inserted around wine bottles neck. Pressing the button, a registered voice will list the name of the wine, its characteristics and combinations with various dishes, so that it is impossible to choose the wrong wine! Cheers!

The system, created for wine, can be adapted to any type of product, simply by changing its design. Contact us if you are interested in developing a talking assistive device for your product!

This is only the first part of our adventure ... Follow us to find out what other incredible projects we at Lumi Industries have shown at Maker Faire Zagreb and Maker Faire European edition in Rome!
